Meet Your Farmers

Our Story

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I asked a friend to try and get me a weekend gig working at the farmers market. I had no idea that it would lead me down two seasons of early mornings and chilly bike rides through the empty streets of Chicago, unloading the big white box truck in the dark and learning the cadence of setting up tents in perfect rhythm with people that would become great friends and one person who would change the course of my life forever. The work was hard and the days would get hot requiring revitalizing drinks from our giant insulated sippy cups. Sometimes so many people would come that the madness felt like it would never end and then the farmer would signal that its time to start breaking down causing everyone to rush together because we knew that leaving late would lead to irate farmer complaints and general sourness. My job was with Iron Creek organic farm and it was at Green City farmers market one of the busiest farmers markets in the country. My Full time Job as a brewer for Revolution Brewing had inspired my love for gastronomy and all the flavors of food and drink which lead to a love for cooking. That first season it felt like every weekend was an amazing new surprise learning about new varieties of vegetables and getting to taste them and take them home from work and cook with them. I was falling in love with the pace, produce and the people who inhabited the market. I also began working a second day with Iron Creek at the Logan Square farmers market.

Enter Brittney.

Returning from worldly travels after the season began, Brittney and I quickly became friends after working together at Green City market and could commonly be found taking a dip after a long, exhaustive day in the nearby lake Michigan waters, or rushing home to cook some of our freshly acquired market bounty. As Brittney and I grew closer I learned about her dreams of starting her own farm one day growing organic fruits and vegetables and as an avid outdoorsman I also dreamed of natural space the city could not provide me. Brittney and I got engaged and decided to take the steps to achieve our dreams of owning a farm and purchased our first home with farm land in March of 2021 in St. Joseph, Michigan. So begins the Terra Queen Farm saga.

Our story is only beginning and as we embark upon our first season we face many challenges ahead. We will soon be welcoming a new addition to our family and its a very exciting time with lots of change. As a new farm we are starting work on our organic certification which we hope to have for 2024. Thanks so much for your interest in our little family farm. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about us or if there is anything we can do for you. We hope to hear from you.

SUSTAINABILITY

At Terra Queen sustainability is paramount to our farming system.

When an agricultural system churns out produce that is unbelievably cheap but also uses harsh and harmful pesticides which end up in the ground water and uses methods that destroy the soil health, is it really cheap?

Farming in a way that respects the land and builds soil health is central to our farming philosophy. All creatures play a part on our farm and we do not spray any harmful chemicals anywhere on the property. For our health, the health of our customers and the health of the planet, we have made it our mission to offer consciously grown food to our local communities.

LOCAL

We believe that a better food system starts with responsibly sourced produce.

Not only does buying local support small businesses and your community, but you can be sure it will be fresher and taste better.
